Artificial Grass Pile Height Guide: Choosing the Right Turf for Each Use

By CEYTO YAPI Published

Cross-section samples comparing artificial grass pile height for different uses

Artificial grass pile height is usually the first number buyers look at on a specification sheet, and often the one they over-rely on. Pile height tells you how tall the yarn stands above the backing, but on its own it says little about how the turf will look, feel or wear. A short, dense carpet can outperform a tall, sparse one. This guide explains how pile height relates to different uses, and how density, Dtex, stitch rate and infill work together, so that importers, distributors and contractors can specify synthetic turf with confidence.

What artificial grass pile height means

Pile height is the length of the yarn measured from the top of the backing to the tip of the blades, normally given in millimetres. It is set during tufting and cannot be changed afterwards.

Taller pile generally looks more like a natural lawn and feels softer, but it also uses more yarn per square metre, which adds weight and cost. Taller blades also tend to lean over more with traffic unless they are supported by enough density, a resilient yarn shape or infill. Shorter pile is easier to maintain, stays upright more easily and suits decorative or high-traffic surfaces where appearance matters more than softness.

Choosing artificial grass pile height by application

Different applications push the choice in different directions:

  • Decorative use — terraces, balconies, events, exhibition stands, shop displays. Short pile is common because it lies flat, cleans easily and looks tidy. See decorative artificial grass.
  • Garden and landscaping — lawns, rooftops, play areas, pet areas. Medium to longer pile is popular for a natural, soft look, balanced against foot traffic and maintenance. See garden artificial grass and artificial grass landscaping.
  • Sports — football pitches, mini-football, training areas. Pile height is chosen together with the infill system and the performance requirements of the governing body or project specification. See football artificial turf and sports field applications.

General industry ranges (reference only)

The table below shows ranges commonly seen in the artificial grass market. They are general industry ranges, not CEYTO YAPI specifications, and individual products and project requirements vary.

Density, Dtex and stitch rate explained

Pile height only makes sense alongside the numbers that describe how much yarn is in the carpet.

Dtex

Dtex is a unit of linear mass for yarn: the weight in grams of 10,000 metres of yarn. A higher Dtex means a heavier, thicker yarn bundle. Heavier yarn generally gives better resilience and a fuller look, but costs more. When comparing quotes, check whether Dtex refers to a single filament or the whole yarn bundle, and whether it covers the main yarn only or includes the thatch.

Gauge

Gauge is the distance between tufting rows, usually expressed in fractions of an inch (for example 3/8”, 5/8” or 3/4”). Smaller gauge means rows are closer together.

Stitch rate

Stitch rate is the number of tufts per unit length along each row, often quoted per metre or per 10 cm. Together with gauge, it determines how many tufts sit in each square metre.

Density

Density is commonly stated as tufts (or stitches) per square metre and is derived from gauge and stitch rate. Higher density covers the backing better and helps tall pile stay upright.

Total weight

Total yarn weight per square metre combines pile height, Dtex and density. It is a useful single figure for comparing products, as long as both suppliers measure it the same way.

Comparison tip: when two offers have the same pile height, compare Dtex, gauge, stitch rate and yarn weight before comparing price.

Infill: when and why

Infill is granular material brushed into the turf after installation.

  • Silica sand adds weight to keep the carpet in place, supports the blades and can improve durability in landscape turf.
  • Performance infill (rubber or alternative organic or synthetic materials) is used in many football systems to provide shock absorption and ball and player interaction.
  • No infill is common for decorative and many short-pile products.

Local regulations and project specifications increasingly govern which infill materials can be used, especially on sports fields. Check current rules in your market before you specify a system.

Other factors that matter as much as pile height

  • Yarn shape — profiles such as flat, diamond, C, W or spine-shaped blades affect resilience and how light reflects.
  • Thatch — a curled secondary yarn at the base adds support and a natural look.
  • Colour mix — single or multi-tone greens and beige thatch change the appearance significantly.
  • Backing and coating — the primary backing and coating hold the tufts; ask about drainage holes and tuft bind.
  • UV stabilisation — important for colour retention in sunny climates.
  • Roll width and length — affects installation seams and container loading: [TODO: roll sizes].
