Where artificial grass landscaping makes sense
Synthetic turf is not a replacement for every lawn, and many designers combine it with real planting, gravel and paving. Used selectively, it solves clear problems:
- Water restrictions and hot climates – no irrigation needed once installed.
- Roof terraces and podiums – lighter than soil-based lawns and no root penetration into waterproofing.
- Shaded or heavily used areas – where natural grass thins out under trees or foot traffic.
- Playgrounds and pet areas – clean, even surface that dries quickly.
- Road medians and roundabouts – green appearance without maintenance crews working in traffic.
Matching turf to each landscape area
| Area | Recommended product | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lawns, villa gardens, play areas | Garden artificial grass | Softer, natural-looking pile for regular foot use |
| Terraces, planters, displays, medians | Decorative artificial grass | Shorter pile, economical for visual areas |
| Boundaries, service areas, bin stores | Grass fence roll | Screens unwanted views and blends with the lawn |
In general, landscaping lawns use a medium pile height with multi-tone yarn and a thatch layer for a natural look, while decorative areas use shorter piles. Our available heights, colours and roll widths: [TODO: landscaping turf specifications]. The artificial grass pile height guide explains how pile height affects look, feel and cost.
What landscape contractors should specify
- Area and layout – total square metres plus the shape of each zone, so roll widths can be chosen to minimise joins and waste.
- Pile height and density – based on foot traffic and the look the client wants.
- Colour tone – lighter or darker greens to suit the local climate and surrounding planting.
- Drainage – turf backing is typically perforated for drainage; confirm our backing type: [TODO: backing and drainage].
- Accessories – joining tape, adhesive and pins are often sourced locally; tell us if you need them included.
Installation and project considerations
The result depends on the base. Contractors typically excavate, lay a compacted granular sub-base, add a fine levelling layer and weed membrane, then lay and join the turf with seams running in the same pile direction. On roof terraces a drainage mat is often added, and the load-bearing capacity of the roof should be confirmed by the building engineer. In playgrounds, a shock pad under the turf is commonly used beneath climbing frames and swings to meet local fall-height rules. Brushing the pile periodically and removing leaves keeps the surface looking fresh for longer. Where turf meets a boundary, a grass fence screen keeps the green line continuous; our grass fence installation guide covers fixing it to existing fencing.
